In this workshop, students will be introduced to the world of translation through Jae Marple, a French, Spanish and Portuguese to English translator specialising in sport, tourism and international development.
Jae will discuss his personal experience to date, explaining how he has combined his background in languages with his hobbies and academic interests to forge a fun and highly rewarding career for himself as a freelance translator. As part of his work, Jae has served many translation agencies and direct clients, mostly translating content related to football, rugby, hotels, restaurants and efforts to fight deadly diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. But because there are no limits to the usefulness and necessity of language skills, he will also shed light on the type of work that many of his translation colleagues do on a daily basis to provide students with a comprehensive overview of the various specialist areas covered by professional translators.
As an add-on, Jae will also invite students to consider other potential careers for people with language skills, which has proven to be a highly thought-provoking exercise for students in the schools that he has already visited.

This event is open to Yr9+ within schools and colleges across the UK. The workshops will be delivered virtually, on Google Classrooms, with sign-in to the events made via the class teacher on behalf of a whole class or year group.
