Over 40 years’ experience of local and national government decision making structures, including 18 years as a Member of the UK Parliament.
Previously worked in the Insurance Industry, as a policy advisor to local government and within the European Union as a policy officer for the National Council for Voluntary Organisations. Prior to being elected to Parliament he ran a not for profit company that assisted people facing disadvantaged in the labour market find employment.
In Parliament he served as a Party Spokesman on Housing, Tourism and Local Government, as a Deputy Chief Whip, and as a member of several Select Committees . He was appointed to the Speaker’s Panel of Chairs (Assistant Speakers) in 2014. He is a Vice-President of JDRF UK, sits on the Executive Committee of the Former Members of Parliament Association, and is the lay Trustee of the ABCD Diabetes Trust. He has lived with Type 1 diabetes for over three decades.
