Andrew Green

After a series of senior information services posts in UK universities, most recently in Swansea University, Andrew became Librarian (chief executive) of the National Library of Wales in 1998. The National Library in Aberystwyth is one of Wales’s leading cultural and information institutions: it is an archive, a screen and sound collection and an art gallery as well as a library, and has developed a reputation as a pioneer in digital and online services. Andrew retired from the Library in March 2013. Among his professional interests are strategic planning, digitisation, legal deposit and cultural services. He was for many years a member of the Council of Aberystwyth University, and Chair of the Board of Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, the body that promotes higher education through the medium of the Welsh language. He has chaired or been a member of many Welsh and UK institutions, including Welsh Government advisory bodies, SCONUL, Research Libraries UK, JISC and the British Council. He has published and broadcast widely on the transmission of information and culture. Half-English and half-Scots, he was brought up in Yorkshire and educated in Wakefield, Cambridge and Aberystwyth. He has spend most of his adult life in Wales and is a fluent Welsh speaker. He now lives in Swansea.

In 2019 he published the books Wales in 100 objects and Cymru mewn 100 gwrthrych.
