Qualified in Medicine (MD) and Rhodes Scholar in 1967, studied Psychology and Philosophy in Oxford (MA 1969), Researcher Oxford University Department of Psychiatry (BSc. 1971), ORHA Research Fellow in Clinical Psychopharmacology (DM 1980), Consultant Psychiatrist in Banbury (1980), Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Chief Executive Oxfordshire Mental Healthcare NHS Trust (1986-1999). Founder of St Matthew’s Hospital dedicated to the successful rehabilitation of people with a history of repeated admissions to hospitals.
I have chosen rehabilitation as a speciality as everyone needs a chance and people who have repeatedly fail deserve something different. I believe that the more we know about how the mind works and about what can go wrong the less prejudiced we can be when thinking and talking about mental illness. I believe that psychoeducation can be a powerful protective factor against the risks to young people’s mental wellbeing from historical or current pressures and traumas and would be delighted to share my thoughts and experiences with young people.
