Chair, Institution of Environmental Sciences

Julie Hill has worked on environmental policy for over thirty five years. She is one of the inaugural Board Members of the Office for Environmental Protection, as well as Chair of the Institution of Environmental Sciences and Chair of the Advisory Committee on Social Sciences for the Food Standards Agency. She is former Director of, and now an Associate of, Green Alliance – one of the UK’s foremost environmental policy organisations. Past roles include Chair of the Waste and Resources Action Programme, Independent Board Member of the Consumer Council for Water, Non-Executive Director of the Eden Project in Cornwall and a member of the board of the Environment Agency for England and Wales. She has also been a member of the Government’s Commission on Environmental Markets and Economic Performance, Deputy Chair of the Agriculture and Environment Biotechnology Commission (AEBC), and a member of the Government’s GM Science Review Panel. She has authored and co-authored a number of publications on business and the environment, biotechnology and waste policy including ‘A Zero Waste UK’ published by IPPR in 2006. Her book ‘The Secret Life of Stuff’ was published by Vintage Books (Random House) in January 2011. She was a appointed a Visiting Professor of the University of Surrey in 2017. She was awarded an MBE in 2001.
