Paul Boateng was born in Hackney, brought up in Ghana and Hemel Hempstead, to become a civil liberty lawyer, one of Britains first Black MPs (1987-2005) and the first Black Cabinet Minister (Chief Secretary to the Treasury 2002-2005) first Black High Commissioner (South Africa 2005 _2009) appointed to the House of Lords 2010, a frequent broadcaster. He now devotes his time to working in Africa, as a lawyer, business advisor, and for charity working on development, governance, and youth issues. He speaks and works in the Lords on these issues. He is also a Methodist lay preacher.
