Maureen Sumner Smith

Maureen has full responsibility for the business performance and operations for all the countries within BSI’s European region (including the UK), which employs around 1200 people. As such, she leads operational delivery, technical review and sales and marketing activities as well as being responsible for delivering and tracking against the EMEA region’s strategic plan. She is directly accountable for the operation of all BSI’s business streams including assurance services incorporating the Kitemark™ plus training and certification.

Prior to becoming COO, Maureen was Managing Director of BSI’s UK business, responsible for the day-to-day management of 700 staff and leading the operational trading and strategic growth of UK Sales, Marketing & Operations. Before that she was Global Marketing Director at BSI with responsibility for group and global strategic marketing including customer insight, portfolio management, e-commerce and brand development. She directly led a group of 50 individuals across all functions of marketing within the UK and was responsible outside the UK for setting strategic direction and the development of ‘best practice’ marketing tools and processes.

With extensive international experience in profit & loss management, marketing and business leadership roles within B2B global companies, she has delivered business growth and increased profitability for a variety of products and services in multiple national markets.

Maureen was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil but came to the UK for her education where she remained and married – she has brought up two children alongside her career.
