I grew up in a single-parent, low-income family in Milton Keynes and attended Nottingham University despite becoming homeless at one point. After stints working as as a teacher and an editors’ secretary, I joined the graduate scheme of a trade newspaper publisher and worked my way up to the national media. I spent almost eight years working in Greater China, where I learned to speak Mandarin Chinese. I spend much of my free time giving back, whether that’s volunteering in soup kitchens or mentoring young adults from disadvantaged families. I like to write about social mobility, homelessness and marginalized social groups.
