Sir John Gieve

Sir John Gieve served as Deputy Governor of the Bank of England from 2006 to 2009 during the height of the financial crisis. He was a member of the Monetary Policy Committee which sets UK interest rates and sat on the board of the FSA which regulates the financial sector. Since leaving the Bank, he has become Chairman of VocaLink which runs the payments systems for the British banking system. He is also a non- executive director of CLS, the foreign exchange settlement service and Morgan Stanley International, the European subsidiary of the US investment bank. He is Chair of trustees of the Clore Social Leadership Programme , which helps develop leaders for the future in the voluntary sector and is also a trustee of Nesta, the innovation charity, and Cumberland Lodge, He is a no-executive director of Homerton NHS Foundation Trust which provides acute and community services ot Hackney and the City of London.

Before joining the Bank, Sir John was Permanent Secretary at the Home Office during a period when the department was responding to the increased terrorist threat in the wake of 9/11. Other responsibilities included programmes to reduce crime and anti social behaviour, co-ordinating the Criminal Justice System, the identity card scheme, immigration and asylum.

Before the Home Office John spent twenty years at the Treasury, involved in banking and City regulation, energy, public services and the Budget. He carried out spending reviews for both Labour and Conservative governments, and served as Private Secretary to three Chancellors: Nigel Lawson, John Major and Norman Lamont.
