After finishing (state) school in 1988, I studied Economics at Bristol University. I had no idea what to do in my career, so I worked my way around the world for two years, and then realised I had to find a ‘proper’ job. So I applied to work in the City, as an financial analyst. I worked for Lehman Brothers and Goldman Sachs, as a trader and Portfolio Manager. I ended up working as CIO for Fidelity, which involves managing a large team of people who invest people’s savings and pensions into government and corporate bonds. Life is a game of luck, but you have to get yourself in the right position to start with.
