To celebrate World Population Day on the 11th July 2022, Water company United Utilities is showcasing how they turn poo into power by tapping into electricity generated by sewtreatment.


This exciting and insightful session will give you a sneak peak into Manchester’s wastewater treatment plant in Manchester, branded “the most innovative green energy scheme in the world”. The award-winning “poo-powered” sludge digestion centre at Davyhulme currently produces renewable energy in the form of biogas to generate green electricity.


You’ll hear from female experts working in our Bioresources and Energy Services team, who will take you on a poo powered journey, highlighting how United Utilities transforms poo into power! You will also find more about

UU and what they do, as well as taking part in fun challenges and quizzes.

United Utilities is responsible for water and wastewater services in the North West of England. Our purpose is to provide great water and more for the North West. We deliver 1.8 billion litres of water a day to more than 3 million homes and businesses in the North West, as well as treating all the wastewater which disappears around the U-bend. Keeping the region flowing relies on a vast behind the scenes operation, involving hundreds of reservoirs, treatment works and pumping stations; thousands of kilometres of water pipes and sewers and a 5,000 strong workforce.
