Use your foreign language skills creatively in a translation workshop
Age: 14-19
Duration: 1
Industry: Leisure/Sport
Application deadline: 12/06/2023
Dates: 06/07/2023 – 06/07/2023
Timings: 09:30 – 11:30
In this session, you will have the opportunity to translate the types of texts that a professional translator would normally work on for their clients.
To begin with, Jae will briefly explain what he does in his day-to-day work, before giving you some advice and pointers on the kinds of things you should be doing when working on translations. You will then get to apply this guidance and the foreign language skills that you have acquired in MFL classes to one of two texts (you will have the choice between a sports- and tourism-related text for either French to English or Spanish to English, depending on the language you learn at school).
You will be working in groups, potentially with students from other schools, during the practical part of this workshop, pooling together all your knowledge and research to form the best possible English versions of the original texts. Jae will also dip in and out of each break-out room to help each group and provide a word bank of the most challenging words and terms. You will then have the opportunity to share and learn from other groups’ suggestions and to compare your work against Jae’s own translations to see what a professional translation looks like and gauge how well you’ve done.
When applying, answer the following questions
- Passion: What cause(s) are you passionate about? Please also explain why.
- Would you prefer to work on the sports- or tourism-related text?
- If you’ve taken French or Spanish A-Level and you’ve done a bit of translation as part of the course, how have you found it?
