You might be familiar with careers on the stage, even some of the careers involved in making a production, such as Directing, Producing or Design, For every production of Opera or Ballet that appears on the stage of the Royal Opera House, over 300 people are involved, either in making things that an audience sees on the stage or rigging and operating the technical elements of the production. Not to mention all the hundreds of people involved in departments like planning, marketing and front of house. The Royal Opera House is one of Europe's busiest stages and employs over 1000 permanent members of staff and many more freelancers.

  • In this session we will take a look at the different careers routes in Theatre and help you to discover where you could use your skills and interests.
  • If you are interested in things like Engineering, Electrics, Carpentry, IT, Graphics, Textiles or Art you could have a successful career in theatre.
  • You might also be interested in Marketing, Finance or Event Management- we employ people in all these areas.
  • In the session we'll have a couple of tasters of some of the roles
  • You will hear from experienced members of our technical and production teams how they got into their careers.
  • You will also get the chance to ask our Apprentices what it is like being an apprentice at the Royal Opera House.

This session is just one of the many exciting Experience, Inspiration and National Teen Book Club opportunities on offer at Speakers for Schools between 13th-17th November 2023, as we work in partnership with Screen Skills to promote and raise awareness of careers in the creative sector. Look out for other virtual opportunities on our website or contact your Regional Education Manager to find out about bespoke face to face opportunities for your students/ or get your teachers to contact us to arrange in person opportunities at your school.’

The Royal Opera is a British opera company based in central London, resident at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Along with the English National Opera, it is one of the two principal opera companies in London. Founded in 1946 as the Covent Garden Opera Company, the company had that title until 1968.
