GP and Media Doctor

Dr Ellie Cannon is an NHS GP working in a large north London GP surgery.

Ellie went to Cambridge university after school to study medicine which had always been a childhood ambition. After qualifying as a doctor 6 years later, Ellie embarked on her medical career working as a junior doctor in various hospital specialties including paediatrics, women’s health and care of the elderly. Realising her interest in all aspects of a patients’ health, she decided to turn her career path towards general practice and become a Member of the Royal College of GPs in 2008.

Ellie has worked in the same GP surgery for the last decade, looking after an ethnically diverse and socially mixed population of over 11,000. Although GPs don’t specialize like other doctors, her interests include mental health, paediatrics and women’s health.

Outside of the NHS, Ellie has developed a career as a writer and broadcaster talking on all matters relating to the NHS and health. She is the resident GP for the Mail on Sunday but is probably most well known as the on-screen GP for Sky News Sunrise appearing weekly to discuss medical matters and NHS news. She also regularly appears on Channel 5 news and the Wright Stuff and enjoys being the voice of the well-loved LBC radio health hour.

In 2017 she channelled her inner-geek appearing in a Celebrity Eggheads team of TV doctors!

Ellie uses her medical experience and media voice to advocate for charities including Meningitis Now, Pancreatic Cancer Action, The Eve appeal and the Lullaby Trust. Ellie regularly works on campaigns for Public Health England including the latest Be Clear on Cancer Campaign for Breast cancer and Change for Life.

In March 2018, she was invited by Paula Sheriff MP to present to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Women’s Health at their inaugural Women’s Health Conference, encouraging women of all ages to speak up about female health issues. In 2015, she gave evidence to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Body image focusing on the health of fashion models.

Ellie has written two books: Is Your Job Making You Ill? published in January 2018 and her first book ‘Keep Calm, The New Mum’s Manual’ was released in 2014.
