Alan founded Capoco Design back in 1977, which operates as design & analysis company in the bus, coach and truck sectors. It operates globally with projects on all continents with projects in Europe, North America, Asia and Africa. Award winning projects include the Optare Solo city bus, Millennium Product Award and the Dennis Rapier fire appliance, Design Council Award. UK projects have taken over 60% of the bus market for over 15 years. Two notable global clients are Greyhound in the USA and First Auto Works in China.
In 2000, Alan founded a new research company called Newbus Technology. This company develops new, advanced approaches to public transport systems. Notably these include the first commercial series hybrid bus in the UK.
Another research initiative is the Mobilicity system of automated vehicles for future public transport. Started 2002, Capoco funded the joint research program with the RCA. The Mobilicity concept was exhibited at the North American Auto Show in Detroit and won the Michelin’s Outstanding Design Award
His academic education centred on a Mech Eng degree at Imperial College. This theoretical study was complemented by industrial training at Leyland Motors. This period included research work on the integral, single-deck bus, the Leyland National, which was to become a Design Council Award winner. Alan joined Leyland’s Advanced Vehicle Group and worked on a range of new truck & bus concepts, including the Roadtrain truck, another Design Council Award winner.
The next move was to Rotork Marine, successful manufacturers of fast, commercial powerboats. He acted as Project Engineer on the Mark 5 Sea Truck. This revolutionary boat was awarded both a Design Council Award and the Duke of Edinburgh Designer’s Prize.
