Christian Wolmar is an award-winning writer who worked for many years as Transport Correspondent of The Independent, and has been a freelance for the past 15 years, writing for both national newspapers like The Times and The Guardian and specialist magazines such as Rail and Surveyor. He regularly appears on TV and radio discussing transport and has presented several TV programmes.
He is a prolific author having published a series of history books on the railways covering the London Underground (The Subterranean Railway ), Britain’s railways (Fire and Steam) and the world’s railways (Blood,Iron and Gold) . His latest book, The Great Railway Revolution is a history of the American railroads and his history of the Transsiberian railway is due to be published in late 2013.
Christian has toured both Germany and Holland,giving talks, and has twice being invited to give presentations in Australia, and is a regular speaker at conferences on current matters affecting transport . He is also an experienced chair of transport conferences, having hosted numerous events both in the UK and Europe.
Christian was a board member of Cycling England until its abolition in the spring of 2011 and is a founding trustee of the Railway Children charity. He is a keen cricketer, runs 10k races and uses his bicycle as his main form of urban transport.
He has recently announced his attention to seek the Labour nomination for the London mayoral election in 2016.
