I have worked in the construction industry for 46 years with major construction and housing companies. Since 1986 I have run my own business (a builders merchant) supplying materials to the construction sector.
From 2005-2015 I was also Labour Member of Parliament for Ochil and South Perthshire in Scotland. During this period I held positions of Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretaries of State for Culture, Media & Sport and also Work and Pensions as well as Shadow Minister for Business and Shadow Minister for Scotland.
I was responsible for running a number of paliamentary by-election campaigns for the Labour Party (Westminster and Holyrood) in Scotland with a 100% success record. I also spearheaded the Labour Party’s campaign during the Glasgow City Council elections in 2012 winning 44 out of 45 seats contested. I also ran the Scottish Labour Party campaign during the Scottish Independence Referendum in 2014.
I had good and close working relationships with Labour leaders north and south of the border.
I currently a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Former Members of Parliament and Chair of the Scottish Branch of the Association.
I gained a BA Hons in History and Politics from the University of Stirling whilist also working full time.
