According to an FT article from 22 January 2020, Entrenched gender bias and out-of-date family expectations can hold back pupils’ aspirations.Â
The article reveals a story of “Hafsa, a 15-year-old student in Huddersfield, wants to be a web developer or a graphic designer after she leaves school. “I would like to see a change of gender stereotypes,””
The article further states, “Experts are now suggesting that earlier interventions could have a transformative effect. Caren Gestetner is chief executive of Lifting Limits, a charity challenging stereotypes through providing schools with training and classroom materials. She argues that the work of dismantling gender stereotypes has to begin much earlier than secondary school.”
